Our Facades and Cladding Business Unit proudly achieved a significant milestone in Bermondsey with the completion of the £4.3 million cladding remediation works to the Salmon Youth Centre and Davoll Court. To commemorate this achievement, a celebratory event was hosted on-site, drawing key community members, numerous young attendees from the centre, and distinguished local figures, including Althea Loderick, Chief Executive of Southwark Council.
This joyous celebration not only marked the completion of the construction but also highlighted the positive impact these facilities have on the local community. A particularly inspiring moment came from a former attendee of the Salmon Youth Centre, who shared her heartfelt story about how the centre had profoundly shaped her life, providing her with a safe space to learn, grow, and forge meaningful relationships. Her words reinforced the centre’s vital role in supporting Bermondsey’s youth through essential services and programmes that promote personal development. Today, she is proud to be part of the centre’s leadership team.
The enhancements made to the centre’s infrastructure will enable it to continue serving the community for years to come, offering programmes in sports, education, and personal development. With its newly refurbished façade and improved safety measures, the centre can now provide a more secure environment for both youth and staff.
The completion of these renovations signifies a new chapter for both the Salmon Youth Centre and Davoll Court, ensuring they remain safe, modern, and welcoming spaces for the community. As attendees gathered to toast the success of the project, it was evident that these renovations represent more than mere structural improvements—they reflect a renewed commitment to the wellbeing and future of Bermondsey’s residents, particularly its youth.
The project commenced with the comprehensive erection of independent scaffolding, which was fully boarded and enclosed in protective netting, accompanied by the installation of Haki staircases and goods hoists to ensure operational efficiency. Following this, outdated and combustible façade materials, including rainscreen cladding systems, EPS rendering, and spandrel panels, were meticulously removed, as their presence did not comply with the latest safety standards.
Subsequently, the buildings were upgraded with new, non-combustible aluminium cassette panels as part of the rainscreen cladding system. In addition, fire barriers, high-grade insulation, and enhanced waterproofing measures were implemented to ensure compliance with contemporary fire safety regulations. Furthermore, the project encompassed adjustments to brickwork and the installation of fire barriers, which involved the careful removal of bricks at slab levels, party walls, and openings to accommodate new waterproofing membranes and replacement boards. These structural enhancements have significantly strengthened the overall fire resilience of both the Salmon Youth Centre and Davoll Court.
